This is a fabulous high quality vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1930s and is in excellent condition.
The box is made of solid Olive Wood, details of which are given below. This has beautiful figuration and a wonderful warm rich colour.
The box is in the form of books. There are two books horizontally placed at the top and bottom, and a volume of upright books in between. These are numbered in hand painted Roman Numerals. There is a secret lock hidden behind the bottom row of books, and a secret compartment within the bottom horizontally placed book. Instructions on how to access the secret lock and compartment will be sent along with the box.
The lid has beautiful hand painted swallows, surrounded by a very decorative inlaid frame. The inlay has a wonderful geometric design and is made up of various hardwoods.
The box is complete with its original brass hinges. It has a fully working replacement lock and a replacement key.
The bottom of the box has two soft felt strips to protect the surfaces of your furniture.
The swallows on this box were most likely added as a form of symbolism. The swallow has long been representative of the safe journey home of a loved one.
The interior has two swing opening compartments at the top, and a further larger compartment beneath.
The top two compartments plus the inside of the lid, are complete with their original, deeply padded and quilted silk panels. The silk is a beautiful dusky pink colour.
The larger compartment has been newly refurbished. This has a new padded satin panel and its interior walls have new paper linings. The satin and paper is a beautiful Raspberry red colour.
The interior walls to the inside of the lid are also lined with the same paper.

About Olive Wood
Olive wood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olive wood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density, and takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 80 plus years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact and the Swallows haven't lost any of their paint. There is very little wear to the Olive Wood.
Both the original and new satin and paper linings are in excellent condition. Even the original satin is free from splits and has only a few light marks. This is rare with satin of this age!
The hinges are in good working order and the box locks securely.
There is a fine split on the bottom of the box which cannot be seen unless you turn the box upside down. The split does not affect the good solid structure of the box, and should not worsen unless the box is knocked or dropped.
