This is a lovely old English Art Deco box that has a newly refurbished interior. It dates to the 1920s and is made of wood and Electroplated Nickel Silver. The lid has its original gilt brass finish and the wooden sides have been newly restored.

The Exterior

The front, rear and lid of this charming old box are made of Electroplated Nickel Silver (EPNS). This is an amalgamation of copper, nickel and zinc which creates a metal with a sterling silver appearance.

The lid has a lovely 'stop' hinge that holds it upright and its original gilt brass finish. It also has an engine-turned engraved pattern and a vacant (blank) cartouche in the centre. This can be personalised with an engraved name or initials/date if desired. A keycutter or jewellers can often provide an engraving service at a very reasonable price.

The sides of the box are made of wood and have a lovely dark ebonised finish. These have been newly restored with high-quality glossy enamel paint.

The Interior

The interior has a single wood-lined compartment that has been newly refurbished. It has a new padded plush velvet lining to the base and new printed cotton linings to the walls. The velvet is a beautiful teal green shade and the cotton is light yellow with colourful printed Daisies.

Symbolism of Daisies

Daisies symbolise innocence, purity and love. The Daisy, In Norse mythology, is the Goddess Freya's sacred flower. Freya is the Goddess of love, beauty and fertility and some believe that her sacred Daisy came to symbolise childbirth, motherhood and new beginnings. Daisies are sometimes given as a gift to congratulate new mothers.

Metal Stamps/History

The bottom of the box is stamped 'Made in England' and has some old hand-engraved numbers.

The box started like as a cigarette box and is a wonderful piece of social history. It has now been lined to make it into a functional box for jewellery.

There is no old cigarette odour present.

Condition

This box is in good condition for its 100 years of age.

The sides have been restored to their former glory and the interior linings, being new, are in beautiful clean, unused condition. The hinge is still in perfect working order and the lid closes flush.

The gilt brass finish has some wear and blemishes and the EPNS has some wear and light surface scratches in a few areas. Some small areas of copper are showing through the EPNS on the rear of the box. All of this wear is from age, handling and honest use. Please view all of the photos provided as they form a part of the box's description.
