This is a beautiful vintage jewellery box, made of Rosewood and adorned with silver embellishments. It dates to the late 1930s and was made in Portugal. It has the Portuguese word for jewellery, 'JOIAS', upon the lid, in beautiful silver fancy script. The silver has Portuguese hallmarks.
The Exterior
This box is made of beautiful Rosewood which has a rich colour and a lovely grain.
There are beautiful hallmarked silver embellishments to the lid, plus a decorative hallmarked silver escutcheon to the keyhole.
JOIAS, the Portuguese word for jewellery, is in silver fancy script, across the centre of the lid. The lettering is decorated with beautiful flowers and engraved details. The silver corner embellishments have stunning high relief 3-dimensional Roses and pretty engraved leaves. The Roses have been created by a repousse technique, whereby the silver is hammered out from the underside.
The silver escutcheon is beautifully detailed with raised scrolls, beading and flowers.
The lock itself is also silver. Please note that the lock is not functional. It has no key and the lock keep has been removed in the past.
The box has a wooden hinged opening.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. This has its original silk linings and twisted silk cord trim. The silk is beautifully ruched around the sides and is padded to the base.
The inside of the lid has its original mirror which has lovely bevelled edges. This is surrounded by its original ruched silk frame and twisted silk cord trim.
The silk is a colourful coral shade.
Hallmarks/Makers Marks
The silver has Portuguese hallmarks and a maker's mark (please see image 5). The hallmark is an Eagle's head with an 833 silver purity stamp beneath it. This shows the silver is 833 grade (has an 83.3% silver content). This is a slightly lower grade of silver than 925 (92.5%) sterling. This hallmark was used on Portuguese silver from 1938-1984. The shape of the cartouche surrounding the hallmark shows that the silver was assayed in Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal. The maker's mark is a Wheatsheaf stamp. We have not been able to attribute this to a particular silversmith.
The bottom of the box has what appears to be a maker's mark and design no. It has a stamp of a Roman winged helmet with the no 3 beneath it. Please see the last image.
Condition
The exterior of this box is in very good condition. It has sound structure and very little wear, despite its 80-90 years of age. The hinges are still in perfect working order and the lid closes flush. There is a small hairline crack/small piece of wood missing on the back edge of the lid. This is not overly noticeable.
All of the silver embellishments are present and securely fitted. These have been polished but still retain some of their naturally built-up tarnish.
The interior linings/mirror have some age-related wear and marks. The silk/silk cord trims have been refitted in certain areas and you can see some residue of glue in these regions. The mirror has also been refitted in the past and is slightly off centre. There are a few marks along the bottom edge of the mirror. These marks are due to a small amount of the coating having been lost from the back of the mirror. The marks are not actual damage and the mirror is still smooth in this area.
We have decided to leave the linings and mirror in situ as these are lovely original features of the box which add to its character.
