Beautiful Japanese vintage musical jewellery box. Beautiful glossy lacquered finish and Japanese landscape scene. Mother of Pearl and hand-painted highlights. The interior has 4 colourful pink lined compartments and a mirror.

This is a beautifully decorated vintage jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1950s. It is a musical box and it has a colourful pink lined interior.
The Exterior
This box has a lovely glossy red and black lacquered finish. The lid has small inlaid shards of iridescent Mother of Pearl which add a touch of sparkle to the box, and there is also a smattering of white enamel painted Blossom flowers on the lid.
The lid has a stunning Japanese landscape scene which features Mount Fuji, temples, rolling hills, trees and birds. There are beautiful hand-painted gold highlights to the trees and temples.
The front and sides of the box all have water scenes, featuring boats, hills, temples and birds.
There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole. Please note that the lock is present but is not functional and does not have a key.
The box is complete with its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The box stands raised on stylish long angular panelled feet.
The Interior
The interior has 2 compartments at the top and a further 2 compartments beneath. The top compartments raise up on their own accord as you open the lid of the box. They are attached to quality cantilever hinges which enable this automatic lift-up mechanism. There is a ring storage section between the top compartments.
All of the compartments, plus the inside of the lid, have their original colourful pink ribbed cord linings.
There is a beautiful mirror to the inside of the lid. The pink cord lining surrounding the mirror has been cut to create a beautiful arched feature.
All of the interior has a black lacquered finished which compliments that on the box's exterior.
The musical movement is behind the small compartment at the front right of the interior. It is concealed beneath a black lacquered ledge.
The Musical Movement
The movement is in very good working order. It plays a very pretty tune which we have not currently been able to decipher. Please feel free to give us a call if you'd like to hear the tune before purchasing this box.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 4 turns of the key are all that's required to fully wind the movement.
The movement stops, as it should, when the lid is closed or when it has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.
We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate/malfunction, from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This lovely box is in excellent condition for its 70 or so years of age. It has sound structure and no damage.
There is minor light age-related wear to the lacquered finish.
The musical movement is in very good working order as stated above.
The colours of the lacquer and gold paint are still vivid.
The interior cord linings are very neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. In some areas there are minor light stains from use as we'd expect.
The mirror is lovely and has no chips or cracks. It is predominantly clear with just a few light marks in the centre.
The stop hinges and cantilever hinges are all in good working order.
Any wear is commensurate with age and honest use.
