This is a beautiful Art Deco jewellery box, dating to the 1930s. It has a beautiful fully refurbished interior and is in lovely condition for its 90 plus years of age!
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Walnut veneer which has superb figuration and a rich warm colour. It has a highly decorative wide band of exotic Macassar Ebony veneer, running down the centre of the lid and front. Further details of this variety of Ebony are given below.
There is a stylish solid Walnut lipped handle to the lid that enables you to lift it up with ease.
The box has a stylish 'flat' streamlined design which was very popular throughout the Art Deco era. It stands raised on its original nicely shaped block feet.
The box has its original retracting quadrant hinges that hold the lid upright.
About Macassar Ebony
Macassar is a beautiful exotic hardwood from South East Asia. It is also known as Amara or Striped Ebony, which as you can see derives from its striking characteristic stripes. This stunning striped variety comes from the heartwood of the tree. It is an extremely expensive wood due to the tree growing very slowly and having a limited natural habitat. Also, this species has been exploited over the past few generations, resulting in a population reduction of 20%. It is highly desirable because of its beautiful appearance and this too pushes up its price.
The Interior
The interior has two beautifully partitioned compartments that have both been newly refurbished by ourselves. The bases to the compartments have new padded 'antique rose' velvet panels and the walls have new light cream velvet panels. The antique rose velvet is a gorgeous dusky pink shade.
There is a beautiful new floral printed paper panel to the inside of the lid and the surrounding walls have new cream velvet panels that match those on the walls in the compartments.
The top edge of the front wall is stamped MADE IN ENGLAND.
The New Panels
All of these are completely handmade in order to fit the compartments perfectly. The padded base panels provide cushioned protection for jewellery.
The velvet is high-quality cotton velvet. It is beautifully plush and has a lovely tight weave.
The paper panel to the inside of the lid has a very decorative 'vintage' floral print. The flowers are in various shades of pink. The paper's background is a beautiful mottled light/dark grey and is intermingled with obscure handwriting. We chose the dusky pink shade of velvet to complement the colours of the flowers.

Condition
This beautiful box is in lovely condition for its age! It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
The interior panels and linings, being new, are in immaculate unused condition. There is a very small manufacturing flaw to the velvet in the right compartment. This is barely noticeable.
