Beautiful vintage Italian jewellery box from Anacapri, Italy. Highly figured Birds Eye Maple veneer and beautiful marquetry inlaid flowers to the lid. Plush red velvety linings and Mahogany veneer to the interior. Working lock and key.

This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Anacapri, Italy. It dates to the Mid 20th century and is in wonderful condition. The box is a large example of its type; most of this design are smaller. The musical movement plays 'Romeo & Juliet'.
The Exterior
This box has an eyecatching octagonal shape and beautifully contoured sides. It has beautiful Birds Eye Maple veneer which is highly figured, and stunning marquetry inlaid flowers upon the lid. The inlay consists of a variety of woods that have different colours and grains.
The entire box has been highly polished and lacquered. This finish has given it a gorgeous glossy sheen and a lovely tactile smoothness.
The Birds Eye Maple upon the lid is nicely framed with inlaid stringing.
The box has its original polished metal piano hinge. It stands raised on its original black resin feet.
The bottom of the box has polished and lacquered Satinwood veneer and its original song title and retailer's labels.
The box also has its original working lock and key.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment at the front and the musical movement is cased to the rear of this. There is further storage space upon the casing. The casing can be lifted out should the movement ever require attention.
All of the interior has its original plush red velvety linings. The lining to the base is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid and top edges of the compartment have beautiful Mahogany veneer. This has a glossy polished and lacquered finish.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the tune 'Romeo & Juliet'. It is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Seven turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements and Locks
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements/locks are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.
We are not responsible for movements/locks that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.

Condition
This box is in excellent vintage condition. It has sound structure and only minor wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
All of the veneer and inlay is present and intact. There is a small hairline split which has been repaired, on the back of the box.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and in good clean condition.
The hinges, lock and musical movement are in good working order.
