This is a beautiful antique sewing workbox which can also be used to store jewellery if desired. It is made of solid Tiger Oak that has a lovely light colour and beautiful characteristic stripes.
The Exterior
This wonderful box is made of solid Tiger Oak. The Oak has beautiful characteristic stripes which gave this particular variety its name.
The box is complete with its solid brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright at 90 degrees. It is also complete with its original working brass lock and key.
There is a beautiful inlaid brass shield-shaped cartouche to the lid, and a complementary inlaid diamond-shaped brass escutcheon to the keyhole. The cartouche is blank and can therefore be personalised with engraved names/initials/dates. Your local key cutter or jeweller should offer an engraving service.
The Interior
The interior has its original removable storage tray which is also made of solid Oak. This has multiple compartments of various shapes and sizes. The three central compartments are complete with their original lids. These have their original burgundy silk coverings. The left and right lids have their original ceramic knobs and textured paper backings. The centre lid has a new paper backing and a new satin pull tab (handle) at the side. The sides of the tray also have new satin pull tabs which enable you to lift it out of the box with ease. The numerous compartments can be used to hold cotton reels, measuring tapes, needles/pins, and/or small pieces of jewellery. Please refer to the measurements given below as not all modern cotton reels will fit within the smallest compartments.
The inside of the lid has its original burgundy silk strap with slots for sewing tools, pens and pencils and crochet/crossstitch threads. The strap is secured with its original polished brass studs.
Beneath the tray is a larger and deeper single compartment. Here you can store further sewing related tools and items, as well as sewing/crochet/crossstitch patterns and small pieces of fabric, etc. Alternatively, you can store some larger pieces of jewellery in this compartment.
