FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We Ship Worldwide.
This is a beautiful antique Ebony pot for small pieces of jewellery or little trinkets. The lid has a hallmarked solid silver top. The pot dates to the last year of the Victorian period, circa 1901.
The Exterior
This pot is made of a rare variety of African Ebony wood, called Gabon Ebony. Its lid has a fully hallmarked silver top. The silver features a beautifully embossed cherub, surrounded by a beautiful foliate garland. The Ebony has lovely marbled figuring. It has been beautifully turned to create this lovely cylinder shaped pot. The silver has a glossy high polished finish.
Hallmark/Maker's Mark
The lid has a full English, Chester Assay Office hallmark, with the date letter A for 1901. It has the maker's mark W.N (partially rubbed to age) of silversmith William Naul. This silversmith made a variety of (silver)wares, such as buckles, dishes, photo frames and condiment/dressing table sets.
The bottom of the pot has the number 2008 and the initials PI. These are likely the design no and makers initials.
Chester Hallmarks/Chester Assay Office History
Silver hallmarked in Chester is becoming increasingly rare and collectable. This Assay Office closed in 1962 and so nothing has been assayed there for 58 years.
No silversmiths were operating in Chester after 1820. Chester hallmarks found on silver between 1880-1930 are from silversmiths working in Manchester and Liverpool, who sent their goods to the Chester Assay Office for hallmarking.
The Interior
The interior is unlined.
Condition
This pot is in excellent condition for its age. It is structurally sound and the Ebony has only minor light wear from age and honest use. The lid has a very secure snug fit.
There are a few tiny dints to the silver lid. We have only lightly polished the silver, in order that it retains some of its natural built-up tarnish.
