A beautiful mid Victorian jewellery box with ornate gilt brass adornments and a completely original velvet lined interior. A wonderful feature decorates the inside of the lid. Working lock and key. Circa 1850/1860.

This is a beautiful antique Victorian jewellery box, dating to 1850/1860.
The Exterior
This box is made of the finest figured Walnut which has a superb rich colour and beautiful patina. It is adorned with an array of solid gilt brass; a cartouche, keyhole escutcheon and also corner mounts. This decoration has a beautiful Gothic design. This was the height of Victorian fashion, following the death of Queen Victoria's beloved husband Prince Albert. During this sad period in Victoria's life, she had mourning jewellery and other commemorative items made, which were copied and became immensely popular.
The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges and lock. The stop hinges hold the lid upright. The brass lock keep and key are quality replacements. The box locks securely.
The bottom of the box has a green felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior is in complete original condition and has a very unusual feature within the lid, this being a wonderful panel made of alternating bands of Rosewood and Satinwood. The compartment and walls to the inside of the lid have their original deep blue velvet linings. The velvet panel to the base of the compartment is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
Condition
This box is in very good condition for its 130/140 years of age. It is structurally sound.
There is a hairline within the Walnut to the left side of the lid which is stable and hasn't affected the structure. It isn't overly noticeable, either.
The hinges and lock are in good working order and the box locks securely.
There is some wear to the velvet base panel in the compartment but not enough to warrant replacing it.
There is some wear to the gilt finish of the brasswork as we'd expect with the age of the box.
All in all the originality of this box is superb!
