This is a beautiful antique Walnut jewellery box with decorative inlay and a fully refurbished interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.

This is a beautiful antique Walnut jewellery box with decorative inlay and a fully refurbished interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Walnut veneer and very attractive inlaid Berlin Strapwork bands which run across the lid and down the front of the box. The bands have a beautiful zig zag pattern. The centre of the lid has a beautiful inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche, surrounded by further inlaid decoration, and the keyhole has a matching inlaid escutcheon. All of the inlay is made of various colourful hardwoods.
The box is complete with its original brass lock. It also has its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. Please note the lock is no longer functional and therefore has no key.
The bottom of the box has a new blue felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
About Berlin Strapwork Inlay
This is a beautiful type of inlay, consisting of several varieties of colourful hardwoods. Each inlaid band is made up of hundreds of small pieces of wood, intricately placed to create beautiful symmetrical or asymmetrical patterns.
The Interior
The interior has a single fully refurbished compartment. The base of the compartment plus the inside of the lid have new plush Royal Blue velvet panels. These are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The interior walls have new quality blue paper linings which complement the velvet. The compartment is deep enough to store large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles and watches.
Condition
This lovely old box is in good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no cracks. All of the inlay is securely seated.
The exterior veneer has light age related wear and fine surface scratches. There is a small knock to the wood infront of the lock which is somewhat disguised by the dark ebonised finish. None of the wear spoils the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate clean/unused condition.
The hinges are still in good working order. Two of the original screws in the left hinge have been replaced at some point, long ago, during the box's history.
