A beautiful antique Japanese jewellery box, dating to 1890/1900. The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and a hand-painted songbird amongst foliage. The interior compartment has a new padded plush velvet panel that provides cushioned protection for jewellery.

This is a wonderful antique Japanese jewellery box, dating to 1890/1900. It has a beautiful lacquered finish and hand-painted decoration, plus a new plush velvet panel to the interior.
The Exterior
This box has a lovely black lacquered finish and a beautiful hand-painted songbird amongst foliage, on the lid.
The box has its lovely original push-button catch as well as its original hinges. A very decorative metal escutcheon surrounds the button and this is beautifully engraved with a scrolling heart and leaves.
The lacquer has been newly polished to bring back its former glossy sheen.
A new black felt covering has been added to the bottom. This will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has a single deep storage compartment. This too has a black lacquered finish and is decorated with speckles of glittery gold paint.
A new removable padded Royal Blue velvet panel has been added to the base of the compartment. This makes the box more functional for jewellery storage! The speckled lacquered finish beneath the velvet panel is so lovely and in such good condition, that we decided to make a panel that is removable rather than fixed. This panel can therefore be removed if desired if you wish to view the finish beneath. We advise using a fine blunt instrument to lift up the panel. This will prevent its velvet and card backing from becoming damaged during its removal.
The compartment is deep enough to hold large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles/watches and chunky beads.
The New Velvet Panel
This has been completely handmade to ensure that it fits the compartment perfectly.
A quality premium velvet has been used. This is plush and has a beautiful tight weave. The panel is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.

Condition
This beautiful box is in very good condition for its 110-120 years of age.
There is very minor wear and a few light marks to the black lacquered finish.
The hinges and button catch are still in good working order.
The interior velvet panel and felt covering on the bottom, are in immaculate condition, being new.
