Stylish vintage Italian leather jewellery box with a beautiful contoured form. Tooled and embossed gilt decoration to both the exterior and interior. Working lock and key. Three interior compartments plus ring storage section.

This is a high-quality Italian vintage leather jewellery box, complete with its original working lock and key. It dates to the 1960s/1970s and is in excellent condition for its age.
The Exterior
This box has a lovely leather finish and a beautifully contoured form. It has beautiful tooled and embossed gilt decoration to the lid and all four sides, plus complementary gilt decoration to the keyhole. The leather is tan and has some beautiful dark orange flame-like streaks.
The box is complete with its original piano hinge and its original working lock and pretty shaped key. The key has its original little tassel.
The bottom of the box has its original high-quality watered silk covering. This has a small embossed MADE IN ITALY stamp.
About The Silk
Watered silk, also known as Moire silk, is most often created by a technique called calendering. With calendering the fabric is folded in half lengthwise, with the face side inwards and the two selvedges (self-finished edges) running together side by side. Ribbed rollers are then used across the fabric with the ribs producing the beautiful watermarks. The rollers polish the surface of the fabric making it smoother and giving it a lustrous sheen.
The same Moire effects can also be achieved by varying the tension in the warp and weft of the weave.
It is the beautifully produced wavy marks in the silk that gave watered silk its name.
The Interior
The interior has a removable storage tray at the top which has two compartments and a ring storage section. Beneath the tray is a further, larger, single storage compartment.
The Storage Tray
The tray has the same leather finish as the exterior.
The bottom of the tray has the same beautiful watered silk covering as that on the bottom of the box.
The sides and top edges of the tray have beautiful tooled and embossed gilt decoration. All of this complements the decoration on the exterior.
The compartments and the ring storage section have their original velvet-like linings. The compartments have their original protective pads with decorative serrated edges and silk pull tabs. There are also silk pull tabs on each side of the tray which enable you to lift it out of the box with ease.
The Lower Compartment/Inside Of The Lid
The inside of the lid and the lower compartment have the same velvet-like linings as the tray.
Al of the linings are a lovely chocolate brown shade.
There is further tooled and embossed gilt decoration to the top edges on the inside of lid and around the lower compartment. This too complements the decoration on the exterior.
Condition
This beautiful stylish box is still in excellent condition despite its 50-60 years of age. It has sound structure and no damage.
The interior linings are in superb condition and have barely any wear. They are clean, neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying.
The watered silk is still in wonderful condition and it has no stains. There is only minor light wear to the silk on the bottom of the box, just at the very corners.
There is minor light wear to the leather from handling, again just at the very corners of the box.
The lock and hinges are still in very good working order. The key securely locks the box.
