Beautiful vintage Italian musical jewellery box playing 'O Sole Mio'. Beautifully veneered and inlaid. Original pink silk linings and mirror to the interior. Original working lock and key. Circa 1950s/1960s.

This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box. It was made in Sorrento, Italy and it dates to the 1950s/1960s. The box plays the beautiful Italian tune 'O Sole Mio'. Please click the link further down this page to view a short video of the box playing its music.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid wood. It is beautifully veneered and has decorative marquetry inlay to the lid and all four sides. The inlay consists of several colourful varieties of wood and the box is beautifully finished with fine inlaid stringing.
All of the veneer and inlay has a glossy polished and varnished finish.
The box has its original polished metal piano hinge and it stands raised on its original wooden block feet. The feet have the same decorative inlay as that to the edges of the lid.
The box is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. There is further shallow storage space upon the ledge of the casing where small pieces of jewellery such as rings, earrings and pendants can be placed.
The base of the compartment has its original plump quilted silk panel and the interior walls and casing of the movement have their original silk linings. The silk is a lovely baby pink shade.
The inside of the lid has its original fitted mirror, framed by its original pink silk cord trim.
The Musical Movement
This box plays the beautiful tune 'O Sole Mio' which some may recognise from the old Cornetto TV advertisements. These advertisements used the 'O Sole Mio' tune and added the lyrics 'Just One Cornetto' etc.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.

Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Five turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops, as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements that deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This lovely box is very good condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and use.
All of the veneer/inlay is present and secure.
The interior quilted silk panel and linings have some marks and wear from age and honest use. Please view the interior photo.
The musical movement is in good working order, as stated above.
The mirror is still clear and secure. This has a few minor age-related marks but no chips or cracks.
The hinge and feet are secure.
