A beautiful Japanese vintage jewellery box with hand-painted decoration both inside and out. Working lock and key. Circa 1950s/1960s.

This is a beautifully decorated Japanese jewellery box, dating to the 1950s/1960s. It has three compartments plus two drawers, and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
The box has a black lacquered finish and is decorated all over with beautiful hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These scenes include Mount Fuji, temples, bridges and other motifs.
The scene on the lid is surrounded by a beautiful frame of inlaid pieces of Abalone shell. This is colourful and has a beautiful iridescent shine. The front and sides of the box also feature hand-painted scenes.
There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box has two drawers to the front and three compartments inside (see below). It is complete with its original hinges and original working lock and key.
The drawers have their original small metal ring handles.
The black lacquered finish has been newly cleaned and polished.
The Interior
The interior has three individual compartments, with the musical movement being beneath the rear right. The front right compartment has a lacquered lid with its original little ring handle.
The inside of the lid has its original fitted mirror. This features a hand-painted scene which complements the decoration on the box's exterior.
All of the compartments and drawers have their original deep violet blue ribbed cord linings. The mirror is framed with the same material.
The Musical Movement
The box has its original musical movement. This plays a pretty tune, the title of which is unknown.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Four turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. It is best to let the movement fully unwind before rewinding.
Vintage movements/locks are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.
We are not responsible for movements/locks that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement and lock are working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This lovely box is in excellent condition for its 60/70 years of age. It has sound structure and the musical movement and lock are in good working order.
The colours of the paint are still vivid.
The interior linings are still neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. They have a few minor light age related marks, none of which are overly unsightly.
The mirror has some blemishes but the majority of it is still clear.
There is some loss of lacquer to the bottom of the box. This isn't visible unless you look at the box from the underside.
There is some white residue on the back of the box which will not be visible when displaying the box from the front.
The black lacquered finish has dulled somewhat over time. Keeping the box out of direct sunlight will prevent any further fading.
