This is an absolutely beautiful antique jewellery box, dating back to the Regency period, circa 1820/1830. It has a fabulous Rosewood and rare Amboyna wood veneered finish, and a lovely fully refurbished interior. It also has beautiful inlaid decoration which features flowers, foliage and more uncommonly, Stags.

The Exterior

This box has a beautiful sarcophagus shape which makes it more unusual than a standard square or rectangular box. It is predominantly veneered with beautifully figured Rosewood (to the lid, rear and sides) and has rarer Amboyna burl wood veneer to the front. This is an expensive variety of wood because of its scarcity. It comes from the Pterocarpus indicus tree which is native to Southeast Asia, and is known for its unique 'bird's eye' patterns.

The raised section on the lid has beautiful inlaid decoration, including flowers and foliage and a reclining Stag. The Stag is within a beautifully cut and inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche. This section is finished with a very stylish, moulded beaded frame.

The beautiful angular sides of the lid have very decorative Mother of Pearl roundels, intersected with pewter stringing.

The front of the box is beautifully decorated with with two reclining inlaid Stags and further inlaid foliage, in keeping with the theme to the lid. It also has an inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole which complements the cartouche on the lid.

The sides of the box have their original beautifully turned Mahogany ring handles. This is wonderful as these are often missing or damaged on boxes of this age and design. Further to these, the box stands raised on its original lovely turned bun feet.

The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original brass lock but please note this is no longer functional and therefore has no key.

The bottom of the box has a new felt covering. Asides from this the entire exterior is completely original.

As you can see from the photos provided, the condition and visual delight of this box speaks for itself!

The Interior

The interior of this box has been fully refurbished in recent years. There are new plush burgundy velvet-like linings to the inside of the lid and base of the compartment, plus new quality silvered grey textured paper linings to the walls.

The compartment is spacious and will hold a vast amount of jewellery. It is deep enough for large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.

Condition

This box is in superb condition despite its 195-205 years of age. It is a solid and robust box with sound structure.

All of the veneers and inlay are present and intact. There is one minor fine hairline within the veneer on the rear of the box, at the bottom right hand side. This isn't overly noticeable and doesn't detract from the box's very beautiful overall condition.

The new interior linings are neatly fitted and in good clean condition.

The hinges are still in good working order.
