This is a beautiful late Victorian jewellery box dating to 1880/1890. It has a lovely Rosewood veneer and a beautiful newly refurbished interior.
The Exterior
This box has a wonderful Rosewood veneer which has a beautiful rich colour and superb figuration. The Rosewood has been newly polished and has a lovely glossy sheen.
The lid has an inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche, and there is a complementary Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole.
The lid has a beautiful stylish domed form.
The cartouche is 'blind' and can be personalised with an engraved name or initials if desired. Your local key cutter can usually provide a reasonably priced engraving service.
The box is complete with its original lock but please note there is no key. It also has its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.
There is a new red felt covering on the bottom of the box which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has been beautifully refurbished by ourselves.
The base of the compartment has a new red plush velvet panel and all of the walls have new high-quality paper linings. Two different patterned papers have been used and those to the lid are framed with new red silk cord trim. This has a beautiful barley twist design.
The New Velvet Panel and Paper Linings
All of these are completely handmade/cut to size, in order to fit the interior perfectly.
The velvet panel is plumply padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The velvet is high-quality cotton velvet. It is beautifully plush and has a lovely tight weave.
The paper linings have beautiful antique prints. The main paper has a repeating circular flower and scroll pattern. This paper was chosen as it is similar to papers that were used for lining boxes during the Victorian period.
The red twist silk trim was chosen to complement the velvet.

This beautiful box is in very good condition for its 130/140 years of age. It is structurally sound and has only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
All of the inlaid Mother of Pearl is present and intact.
The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate condition.
The hinges are still in very good working order.
