This is a beautiful antique jewellery casket, dating to 1910. It was made in France and has lovely inscriptions carved into the inside of the lid. The interior has been beautifully refurbished and the casket is complete with its original working lock.
The Exterior
This casket is made of solid Walnut and has beautiful hand-carved wooden embellishments. There are large high relief stemmed flowers and leaves to the lid, surrounded by a beautiful moulded frame, plus a carved garland of smaller leafy flowers to the front of the casket.
The lid has beautiful contoured edges and the casket stands raised on a beautifully moulded, stepped plinth base.
The inside of the lid has such beautiful hand-carved inscriptions! 'Grenoble 1910' to both the bottom left and top right, plus 'Mese, mese...' to the centre. These inscriptions were likely added for the casket's original owner, in memory of a certain time/place/event. See more of our thoughts about this below.
The casket is complete with its original brass hinges and working lock. It has an antique replacement key from the same period as the casket that has been fitted to the lock.
The bottom of the box has its original small shaped wooden feet.
The Interior
The interior has a lovely deep storage compartment which has been fully refurbished by ourselves. There is a new padded velvet panel to the base of the compartment and new satin panels to the walls.
The New Panels and Linings
All of these were completely handmade in order to fit the compartment perfectly.
The padded velvet base panel provides cushioned protection for jewellery.
High-quality Duchess satin has been used for the wall panels. This has a lovely sheen and a beautiful tight weave. Premium cotton velvet has been used for the base panel. This has a lovely plush texture and it makes a beautiful contrast against the smooth satin. Both fabrics are a Royal Blue shade.

History of the Box
This beautiful box may have started its life as a very expensive Table box or similar, perhaps being used to store serviettes, napkin rings, and the like. This would tie in with the 'Mese, mese...' inscription, with the word mese translating to 'dinner' in English.
The 'Grenoble 1910' inscriptions likely refer to the original owner's location in France and the year the casket was made.
These are our own personal thoughts which have not been established as fact. Whatever the meanings behind the inscriptions, they add a certain amount of provenace to the casket. It is a wonderful piece of social history!
Condition
This casket is in very good condition for its age. All of the carvings are present and intact. There is only minor light wear to the lid and sides, commensurate with age and honest use. There are scratches to the bottom of the casket, from where it has been moved around on surfaces over the past 110 years or so. This is to be expected on such an old casket that has been loved and used. Obviously you cannot see these scratches unless the casket is turned upside down.
The lid is slightly warped on the right hand side, creating what is known as a 'smile' in the antiques trade. This does not prevent the casket from being locked. The smile is not very noticeable at all, because the lid extends beyond the front wall of the casket. You can only see the smile if the casket is viewed at eye level.
The interior satin and velvet panels are in immaculate condition, being new.
The casket locks securely with its replacement fitted key.
