Beautifully inlaid antique jewellery box, likely made on the French-Italian border. Circa 1880/1890. Original high-quality working continental lock. Original red velvet linings.
FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We Ship Worldwide.
This is a beautifully inlaid antique jewellery box which is completely original throughout. It has its original interior linings plus working lock.
The Exterior
This box has highly figured Birds Eye Maple veneer and beautifully inlaid swallows upon the lid. The inlay consists of several fruitwood varieties and the veneer is framed with both Ebony and Boxwood stringing. The edges of the lid have a complementary dark ebonised finish.
The swallows symbolise the safe journey home of a loved one and so this box has a beautiful sentiment attached to it.
The box is complete with its original brass hinges, and working high-quality continental lock. The key is a new replacement, cut to fit the lock.
Details of the Continental Lock
This box has a wonderful continental lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn if desired.
The Interior
The interior has its original red velvet linings.
Origins/History
This box was likely made somewhere on the French-Italian border; the Birds Eye Maple has a French feel, whereas the red velvet lining suggests an Italian origin.
The box was likely an expensive ladies glove box originally.
Age
1880/1890
Condition
This wonderful box is in very fair condition for its 130/40 years of age. It has sound structure and all of the inlay is still present.
There are a couple of nibbles to the veneer/ebonised finish at the corners of the lid, but nothing that spoils the lovely overall appearance of the box.
The interior velvet has faded and worn in several areas. This may not suit all tastes but it is lovely and original.
The hinges are still in good working order and the box still locks securely.
Notes About Antique Locks
We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
