Beautiful vintage jewellery box from Sorrento, Italy. Wonderful inlaid decoration and a high-quality working continental lock. Original red velvet linings.

This is a 1940s vintage jewellery box made of solid Olivewood. It has beautiful inlaid decoration and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood, details of which are given below. The Olivewood has a lovely aged patina and beautiful figuration.
The lid has beautiful decoration. It has three inlaid Swallows in flight; two bands of tesselated micro mosaic floral inlay, and the Italian word 'RICORDO' in a hand-painted stylish font. This translates to 'Memory/I Remember'. This is a beautiful sentiment which complements the symbolism of the Swallow, this having long been representative of the safe journey home of a loved one. The Swallows are carrying Olive sprigs which symbolise peace. The inlay consists of several varieties of wood, with that of the mosaic having beautifully stained colours.
The box is complete with its original hinges. It also has its original high-quality continental lock and key.
The Micro Mosaic Tesselated Inlay
This type of inlay is skillfully created with hundreds of tiny pieces of wood. It is painstakingly put together over many hours to form a beautiful mosaic pattern, in this instance with a floral design. Several varieties of wood are used, some of which are stained to add colour and dimension to the mosaic.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a dinstinctive grain and rich colour. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
Details of the Continental Lock
This box has a wonderful continental lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn if desired.
The Interior
The interior has two swing opening compartments and a further single large compartment beneath. All three have their original red velvet linings.
Condition
This wonderful box is in excellent condition despite its 80 years of age. It has sound structure and all of the inlay is still present.
There is one minor chip to the bottom right hand side of the top right compartment. Please see the close up photo provided.
The interior linings are in very fair condition with a little wear and a few marks.
The hinges are still in good working order and the box locks securely.
