This is a fabulous large Victorian jewellery box dating to 1850/1860. It has a stunning newly refurbished interior and a working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box has a wonderful Walnut veneer which has a rich warm colour and beautiful figuration.
The lid features a beautiful inlaid urn that is overflowing with flowers and scrolling vines. There are also beautiful inlaid vines and flowers surrounding the keyhole. The design of this feature is wonderfully incorporated around the keyhole's inlaid escutcheon.
The inlay consists of wood, Mother of Pearl shell, further exotic shell (Abalone/Paua shell) and bone. The shell inlay has beautiful iridescent colours.
The lid and front of the box are beautifully finished with frames of inlaid fine brass stringing and there is fabulous Kingwood cross banding to the edges and corners of the box. The Kingwood along with the decorative urn inlay suggests that the box could be French in origin.
All of the beautiful inlays on this box are set flush into the Walnut veneer.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It has a replacement period brass lock and a fitted key.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
About Kingwood
Kingwood is related to the Rosewood family of timbers. It is a quality wood that was favoured by the French kings in the 17th and 18th centuries and this is how its name was derived.
The Interior
The entire interior has been newly refurbished by our skilled box restorer. It also has its original padded silk-covered panel. Further details about this are given below.
At the top of the interior is the box's original French polished storage tray. This has four lovely compartments of various shapes and sizes. The narrow side compartments are ideal for laying out chains and necklaces. The rear compartment is ideal for small pieces of jewellery such as rings, earrings, brooches and pendants. The centre front compartment is ideal for slender bracelets, bangles and watches.
Beneath the tray is a further single large and deep storage compartment. This is extremely roomy and will hold a vast amount of jewellery including large pieces such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.
All of the compartments plus the inside of the lid, have new blue satin panels and linings. The satin panel to the base of the lower compartment is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The satin panel to the inside of the lid is beautifully framed with new blue twisted silk cord trim. The walls of the lower compartment have new high-quality paper linings.
The bottom of the storage tray has a new felt covering which matches that on the bottom of the box. The tray has its original brass ring handles which enable you to lift it out of the box with ease.
The Original Padded Silk Panel
This would've originally been attached to the front of a document pouch on the inside of the lid. Its centre has a plump, deeply padded and quilted silk panel with beautiful silk buttoning detail. This is surrounded by a silk-covered frame with decorative embossed gilt motifs and stringing. It still has its original black silk ribbon loop which enables you to pull the panel forwards.
Our restorer has lined the back of the panel with the same high-quality paper used within the lower storage compartment. He has modified the panel so that it still fits within the lid (without the original document pouch behind it) but can also be removed to see the new satin lining behind it. He has added a beautiful strip of French polished moulding to the lower wall of the lid, enabling the panel to sit snuggly behind this. He has also added a period Victorian dial clasp to the panel which has a decorative flower-shaped fitment. The dial slides up to hold the panel securely within the lid.
The panel is a stunning original feature of this box and an important part of its history. It is for these reasons that our restorer worked hard to incorporate it into his refurbishment. This existing adapted panel alongside the refurbishment has created a wonderful bespoke interior!

Condition
This beautiful box is in excellent condition for its age. It has sound structure and only minor light wear which is commensurate with age and honest use.
All of the inlays are present and secure.
The hinges and lock are still in great working order. The key securely locks the box.
All of the new interior satin and paper linings are in beautiful clean, unworn condition. The same applies to the felt coverings on the bottom of the box and tray.
There is a small nibble to the veneer on the front edge of the body of the box. This is not overly noticeable and is in no way unsightly.
There is a small old repair to the Kingwood cross banding on the front left corner of the lid. This 'new' piece of Kingwood has been placed horizontally instead of vertically and so doesn't perfectly match with the Kingwood adjacent to it. Again, this isn't overly noticeable or unsightly.
