Beautifully Refurbished Inlaid Madeiran Antique Jewellery Box

This is a beautiful antique jewellery box which was made in Madeira, Portugal. The box is made of solid Olivewood and is inlaid with a variety of beautiful Fruitwoods. It has a newly refurbished satin-lined interior and its original working lock and key.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid Olivewood. This has lovely figuration and a beautiful dark stained finish.

The lid has superb marquetry inlay, consisting of several colourful Fruitwoods. It features a couple in a Madeiran Oxen carriage (carros de bois), pulled by Bullocks and attended by men in traditional period Portuguese costume. There are also stunning marquetry inlaid flowers which is most unusual on these old Madeiran boxes. Most only have the Oxen carriage and so the flowers are a beautiful and very rare addition! The flowers include Pansies, a Carnation, a budded Rose and budding Daffodils.

The beautifully inlaid features on the lid are surrounded by a border of inlaid double stringing.

The box is complete with its original working lock and key. It also has its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.

The Interior

The interior has a single storage compartment and has been professionally refurbished by our skilled box restorer.

There are new satin-covered panels in the base of the compartment and the inside of the lid. The satin is a beautiful emerald green shade. Both panels are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The interior walls of the compartment and lid have new high-quality patterned paper linings. The paper is a contrasting lime green shade and has pretty wispy white printed flowers which possibly depict Pansies. This paper was thoughtfully chosen to complement the inlaid Pansies on the lid.

The compartment is quite roomy and will hold a good amount of jewellery. It is deep enough to store large pieces such as watches, bangles and beads.

History/Further Information

This box originates from the island of Madeira. It was made either in the capital city Funchal or in the hillside village of Monte above. It was probably made for Madeira's early tourist market.

The Oxen carriage depicted in the marquetry inlay is a sedan sled. These carriages with wooden runners were the means of travel in Funchal. Wheeled carriages were regarded as unsuitable because of the city's uneven cobbled roadways, steep hills and sharp bends.

The earliest oxcarts are believed to date as far back as 1477. They fell into disuse in the 1970s for hygienic reasons and because the roads had been improved.

The tradition of these carts has been kept alive in the form of sleds known as 'Monte Sledges'. These are used to carry tourists from the village of Monte to Funchal. They still go down the steep hill known as the 'Toboggan run' and they are operated by men dressed in traditional costume.

Some printed information relating to the above will be sent with this box.

Condition

This wonderful box has sound structure and is in very good condition for its 120/130 years of age.

There is a teeny piece of inlay missing on one petal of the left Pansy.

There are a few minor age-related cracks in the lid, just along the front and rear edges. These are superficial and not overly noticeable as they are somewhat masked by the lovely dark stained finish.

The hinges and lock are in good working order. The key securely locks the box.

The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate unworn condition.
