This is a beautiful Art Deco jewellery box, dating to the 1930s. It has a beautiful fully refurbished interior and is in excellent condition for its age.
The Exterior
The lid and front of this very stylish box have beautiful quarter-sawn Walnut veneer. Further details of this are below.
The veneer consists of 2 individual pieces which have been skillfully positioned to create a beautiful symmetrical pattern.
On either side of the Walnut veneer, there are beautiful wide crossbands of Mahogany veneer. There is also beautiful Mahogany veneer to the back and sides of the box. The Mahogany has a beautiful rich colour and lovely figuration.
The lid has a stylish Bakelite lip that enables you to lift it up with ease. Bakelite was very popular during the Art Deco period. At this time it was a brand new material and considered to be very modern.
The box has a stylish 'flat' streamlined design which was also very popular throughout the Art Deco era. It stands slightly raised on its original block feet.
The box has its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.
About The Quarter-Sawn Walnut
The Walnut, having been quarter-sawn, shows off the beautiful internal rays of the wood! Plain sawn Walnut is a lot less decorative. Quarter-sawn Walnut, asides from being decorative, is more stable and much less prone to cupping. It also expands more and contracts less. Quarter-sawn wood is more expensive than plain sawn for all of these reasons.
The Interior
The interior has been newly refurbished by our wonderful box restorer. It has a single wide storage compartment with a new padded satin panel to its base. The walls of the compartment, plus the inside of the lid, are lined with the same satin (unpadded). The satin is a beautiful teal blue shade.
