A fabulous high quality French antique glove box, beautifully converted for practical jewellery storage whilst maintaining the box's originality! A wonderful piece of social history!

This is a very special high quality antique box with extremely decorative parquetry inlay to the lid and beautiful cross banding to all four sides. It started its life as an expensive glove box and has been newly converted for functional jewellery storage. The conversion has been done in such a way as to cleverly retain the original purpose of the box. It is a wonderful piece of social history!

Circa 1870.
The Exterior
All four sides of this wonderful box have beautiful cross banded decoration. This consists of beautiful rare Kingwood and Tulipwood veneers, with the bands skillfully positioned in an alternating fashion.
The lid has fabulous parquetry decoration with the many pieces of inlay having created a symmetrical multi triangle pattern. The parquetry is beautifully framed with inlaid metal stringing and there are complementary metal edges to the lid. This edging adds further attraction as well as protecting the inlay and veneers from potential knocks.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original working brass lock and key. The lock has a high quality double locking mechanism. This was designed to deter potential thieves from stealing the valuable contents of the box. If the thief could not open the box with one turn of the key, the hope would be that the lock was perceived as faulty and the box left alone!
The box has a beautiful drop down front, designed in this fashion to allow easy access to the gloves it would have once held. A small brass hook and eye catch has been added to the interior to hold the drop down front in a closed position. This makes the box more practical for jewellery storage, whilst at the same time retaining the box's originality. The hook can very easily be lifted from the eye to release the drop down front if desired.

The Interior
The interior has a shimmery Birds Eye Maple veneered finish which is another high quality feature of this box! The veneers to the base and inside of the lid have beautiful frames of inlaid red stringing which are probably stained Holly wood or Boxwood.
The base of the compartment has a new raspberry red satin panel which is padded to provide cushioned protection for jewellery. The back of the panel has a pretty floral patterned paper. This panel has been fabricated in such a way as to make it removable. Whilst it allows practical soft storage for jewellery, it can also be removed to allow the original Birds Eye Maple base to be seen. This is far too beautiful to be permanently covered!

Condition
This beautiful box is in excellent condition. It has sound structure and no cracks.
The interior satin panel, being new, is in immaculate unused/unworn condition.
The hinges and lock are in good working order.
There is a small piece of inlay missing on the lid which does not in any way spoil the beautiful appearance of the box.
