Beautiful vintage Japanese musical jewellery box, dating to the 1960s. Decorative hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. The interior compartments have a combination of new padded panels plus their original linings. There is a lovely hand-painted mirror to the inside of the lid.

This is a lovely vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1960s. It is beautifully hand-painted and has newly refurbished compartments.
The Exterior
The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and is beautifully decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These include Mount Fuji, a temple, sailing boats, trees and birds. The painting is in bright colours of red, blue, white, green, yellow and gold. There are some small pieces of Mother of Pearl inlay around the landscape on the lid.
There is a pretty white metal escutcheon to the keyhole which is detailed with engraved sailing boats.
The lid has its original white metal hinges.
The box stands raised on its original beautifully shaped feet.
Please note that there is no key to this box.
The Interior
The interior has two storage compartments and its original hand-painted mirror.
The compartment at the top has a glossy black lacquered finish and rises up on white metal cantilever hinges. This happens automatically when you lift up the lid. The compartment has hinged double doors with small ring handles that are adorned with silver-grey tassels. There are silver hand-painted sailing boats and gold hand-painted waves and birds on both doors. This compartment has a rectangular shape and is ideal for laying out chains and bracelets.
The lower compartment beneath is squarer in shape. The musical movement is cased to the right of this. This has a black lacquered lid which can be removed if the movement ever requires attention.
We have refurbished the bases of both compartments with new padded black cotton panels. These have replaced the original worn panels. The walls to the compartments and inside of the lid have their original burnt orange ribbed cord linings. These have been left in situ as they are still in very good condition overall.
The mirror has a beautiful hand-painted Geisha girl. She is wearing a traditional Japanese Kimono and carrying a parasol. There are pretty pink Cherry Blossom flowers to the left of her. This is one of Japan's most iconic symbols and it is often regarded as its unofficial national flower. Cherry Blossom, which flowers in Spring, is symbolic of a time of renewal and the fleeting nature of life.
The New Padded Panels
These are completely handmade in order to fit the compartments perfectly. The padding provides cushioned protection for jewellery. We chose a black fabric to complement the lacquer and also to create a striking contrast against the burnt orange cord linings.

The Musical Movement
The movement plays 'Rock A Bye Baby' and is in fair vintage working order. It is a little 'noisy' and plays the tune a tad slow. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Six turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The lid needs to be upright in order for the tune to play - if you extend the lid too far backwards the mechanism will shut off.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in very good vintage condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
Some of the exterior lacquer has dulled in places. Keeping the box out of direct sunlight will prevent further dulling. There are some small pieces of the Mother of Pearl missing.
The new interior padded panels are in immaculate condition, being new. The original cord linings are very good overall. They are still neatly fitted and have only minor light wear/marks. There is a small patch of cord missing in the top compartment.
The mirror is securely fitted and free from chips and cracks. It has become cloudy in areas but you can still clearly see yourself in it.
All of the hinges are all in good working order.
