The Maker/Original Retailer
This box was made and originally retailed by John Bagshaw & Sons of Liverpool. This firm operated from 1837, through to the 1930s. They had a high-end store in Church Street, Liverpool, selling high quality fancy goods, including boxes, bags, clocks and dressing cases etc.
The firm's gold embossed maker's stamp is to the right side of the lock.
Notes on this firm will be sent along with the box.
The Interior
The interior has a storage tray with multiple compartments, plus two further larger and deeper compartments beneath.
The tray has three compartments at the front with the central compartment having a circular ring. This ring was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This would now look lovely with a large locket or pendant within it, and/or a slim bracelet/bangle placed around it.
There is a long narrow ring storage section behind the compartments and a further long narrow compartment behind this. This rear compartment is the ideal shape and size for laying out chains.
The bases of the front left and right and rear compartments have their original burgundy red silk linings. Those to the front are padded and provide cushioned protection for jewellery. The ring storage section and centre front compartment have their original red velvet linings/coverings. The bottom of the tray has its original silk covering and tray also has its original leather pull tabs. These enable you to lift out the tray with ease.
The two lower larger compartments are deep and spacious, roomy enough for storing broad bangles, watches and chunky beads. The bases of these plus the inside of the lid have their original padded burgundy red silk panels.
All of the silk is high-quality watered silk.
The interior walls have the same leather finish as on the exterior of the box.
Condition
This box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and only minor light wear and small scuffs, commensurate with age and honest use.
The interior linings are still neatly fitted and in lovely clean condition with no splits or fraying.
