Beautifully refurbished 1930s Italian vintage jewellery box. Hand-painted Swallows surrounded by an inlaid frame. Newly refurbished velvet lined interior.

This is a beautiful vintage jewellery box, made in Italy in the early 20th century. It is both inlaid and hand-painted, and has a newly refurbished interior.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olive wood. The lid has beautiful hand-painted Swallows, surrounded by an inlaid chevron patterned frame. This type of inlay is known as 'Tessellation'. A description of this can be found below. The Swallows are in flight and holding sprigs from the Olive tree. This ties in beautifully with the Olive wood.
The box has its original hinges and lock. Please note the lock is not functional and therefore has no key.
Swallow Symbolism
The Swallows on this box were most likely added to be symbolic. The Swallow has long represented the safe journey home of a loved one.
The Tessellation Inlay
This type of inlay is skillfully created with hundreds of tiny pieces of wood. It is painstakingly put together over many, many hours, to form a beautiful pattern. Several varieties of wood are used to add colour and dimension to the pattern.
About Olive Wood
Olive wood has a distinctive grain and rich colour and characteristic brown and yellow streaks. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olive wood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
The Interior
The interior has two swing opening compartments and a further larger compartment beneath.
All three compartments have been beautifully refurbished with new high quality emerald green cotton velvet panels. The base panels are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid has its original inset oval mirror.
Condition
This wonderful old box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no nasty knocks or deep scratches.
There is minor light wear to the Olive wood.
The hinges are still in good working order.
The interior velvet panels, being new, are in excellent unworn unused condition.
There is one small blemish to the back of the mirror but the front is still smooth.
Please note the top compartments need to be pushed in fully before closing the lid, in order that the lock keep slots flush into the lock.
