Beautiful vintage Italian musical jewellery box from Sorrento, Italy. Highly figured Macassar Ebony and burl wood veneer, and beautiful floral inlay to the lid. Plush peach velvety linings to the interior. Working lock and key. Circa 1970s.

This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1970s and is still in lovely condition overall. The box is a large example of its type and its shape/design is rare. Most Sorrento boxes of this type are much smaller in size and we rarely come across examples with a domed lid such as this box has.
The Exterior
This box has very decorative floral inlay to the lid and beautiful scrolling inlay to all four sides. This makes the box a beautiful display item, no matter how you position it. The inlay consists of various colourful woods and features beautiful leafy flowers, both budding and in full bloom.
The lid has stunning Macassar Ebony veneer and the body has beautiful burl wood veneer. The beautiful figuration of the veneer, combined with the box's elongated shape and domed lid, give the box a beautiful log-like appearance. This, alongside the beautiful floral inlay, makes the box an ideal gift for someone who likes to take walks in woods or forests.
The entire box has a highly polished finish which has given it a gorgeous glossy shine and a tactile smooth surface.
The box has its original polished gold metal piano hinge and its original working brass lock. It also has its original key which has pretty pierced detail.
There is a beautifully shaped and engraved escutcheon to the keyhole which has lovely scroll detail.
The box stands slightly raised on its original nicely shaped block feet.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title label. It also has its original MADE IN ITALY and Made in Sorrento/manufacturer's labels.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment which is fairly large. It is deep enough to hold large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles and watches. The musical movement is nicely cased to the right of the compartment. The ledge of the casing provides further shallower storage space for smaller pieces of jewellery such as rings, earrings, pendants and brooches.
The entire interior has its original plush peach velvety linings. The panels to the base of the compartment and inside of the lid are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Torna a Surrento'. The English translation of this is 'Come Back To Sorrento'. It is a beautiful Neapolitan song which was composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis. The song has since been sung by numerous performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and each of the Three Tenors, to name just a few!
The movement is still in good working order.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Four turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. Please allow the movement to fully unwind before rewinding. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

The movement's casing can easily be removed should it ever require attention.
Condition
This box has sound structure and is in very good preloved condition.
All of the inlay is present and intact.
The back of the lid has two fine lines which cannot be seen from the front view of the box. Please view the photo of the back of the box.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and in good condition. They have some light marks from previous jewellery storage.
The hinge and lock are still in good working order.
