Beautiful vintage Japanese musical jewellery box, dating to the 1960s. Decorative hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. The interior has its original linings, fitted mirrors and revolving ballerina.

This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box. It has a stylish angular piano shape and it was made in Japan in the 1960s.
The Exterior
The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and is beautifully decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These include Mount Fuji, a temple, sailing boats, trees, birds and a bridge. The painting is in vibrant colours of red, blue, white and gold. There is also a smattering of glitter paint to the lid which adds a touch of sparkle to the box!
There is a pretty engraved white metal escutcheon to the keyhole and engraved white metal hinges to the outside lidded compartment. This compartment is situated at the 'keys' section of the piano. It has a lovely lift up lid and a tasselled metal handle.
The lid has its original white metal stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The box stands raised on its original circular feet. It is unclear as to whether it originally had legs.
Please note that there is no key to this box.
The Interior
The interior has two storage compartments and a revolving resin ballerina. It also has its original fitted mirrors to the inside of the lid.
The smaller compartment at the top of the interior raises up on lovely white metal cantilever hinges. This rises automatically when you lift up the lid. This compartment has hinged double doors with white metal handles that are adorned with tassels. There are gold hand-painted sailing boats and waves on both doors.
All three compartments plus the interior walls of the lid, have their original red ribbed cord fabric linings.
The musical movement is concealed beneath a ledge to the right of the interior compartments. The ledge has a new soft red velvet covering. This was professionally added by ourselves to replace the original cord fabric which was damaged.
The Ballerina has a hand-painted gold bustier and a white net skirt with red polka dots. She starts revolving when the musical movement is wound. The ballerina is original to the box. When we acquired the box her feet were damaged and hence she didn't fit onto the rotating post of the movement. We have lovingly repaired and repainted her feet and she now fits securely onto the post. Please note that you shouldn't attempt to remove her from the post - this would cause damage as she is firmly attached.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays a sweet joyful tune. We have not been able to decipher the tune, however, you can listen to it playing on our Facebook video. Please click on the link below:

Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Five turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in very good vintage condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear which is commensurate with age and honest use.
Some of the lacquered finish has slightly dulled in places.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. The original cord fabric has some minor small light stains from previous use.
The mirrors have clouded over time as is often the case with these old Japanese boxes. Please see the close-up photos provided.
The hinges are all in good working order.

13.5 by 9.0cm with a 4.5cm depth. (The depth is shallower in the area beneath the cantilevered compartment).

International postage is £25 by Royal Mail International Tracked and/or Signed For postage. Delivery is fast, within 3-5 working days to Europe and 5-7 working days to the rest of the world. Delivery may be longer depending on the speed of your local postal service and/or if your package has to go through customs.
