This is a very pretty vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1950s/1960s. It is decorated with beautiful flowers and the interior has its original, colourful pink linings.
The Exterior
This box has a stylish piano design. It has a lovely cream lacquered finish (not white as it appears in the photos) and stunning hand-painted flowers and leaves.
There are three red Roses on the lid, two in full bloom and one a bud, all complete with their stems and leaves. These are mingled with pretty blue Forget-Me-Nots. The large bloomed Roses have a lovely raised texture which has given them a beautiful three-dimensional effect. There is a decorative hand-painted gold frame around the edges of the lid.
There are further hand-painted blue Forget-Me-Nots to the front of the box and also upon the 'keys' section.
There is a pretty metal escutcheon to the keyhole which is beautifully engraved with tiny sailing boats.
Please note there is no key with this box.
The box also has its original stop hinges which holds the lid upright.
The Interior
The interior has two storage compartments and its original fitted bevelled edged mirror to the inside of the lid. The musical movement is concealed beneath a ledge to the right of the lower compartment. The top compartment has polished silver metal cantilever hinges. These cause the compartment to automatically rise when you lift up the lid.
Both compartments, plus the inside of the lid, have their original colourful dusky pink linings. The linings are a beautiful brushed ribbed cord fabric and they have a velvet-like appearance.
There are pretty red hand-painted flowers upon the ledge that conceals the musical movement.
The Musical Movement
This box has a vintage Japanese 18 note Fuji movement that plays a very jolly upbeat tune. We have not been able to decipher the tune but please feel free to call us if you'd like to listen to it before purchasing this box.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Six turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement as this will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements and are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction and/or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
You can view our full returns policy which includes musical movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
The ledge concealing the movement can be removed should it ever require attention.
Condition
This box is in lovely vintage condition and is structurally sound. It has some wear commensurate with age and honest use and the red Roses have slightly faded. The cream lacquer has been touched up in certain areas with cream paint. This has been colour matched as closely as possible to the original lacquer.
The interior linings are still in very good condition. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There are a few little marks to those in the lower compartment.
The mirror is still beautifully clear and has no chips or cracks.
The hinges and musical movement are still in very good working order.
