A lovely large antique Walnut and Macassar Ebony jewellery box with four swing opening compartments and a further base compartment. Made in Italy/France, circa 1890/1900. Original purple watered silk linings.

This is a lovely old Victorian antique jewellery box. It was likely made in Italy or France, and it dates to between 1890/1900. It has multiple layered swing opening compartments and its original silk linings.
The box is a rare example of its type. Most of this design have only two swing compartments - this particular box has four.
The Exterior
The exterior has lovely Walnut veneer which has beautiful figuration.
The box has beautiful contours and angles, and a stylish raised domed panel upon the lid. It stands on its original turned ball feet.
The lid has replacement vintage brass hinges. These are 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.
The box has its original brass lock but please note there is no key.
The Interior
The interior has four swing opening compartments plus a further larger compartment beneath.
All five compartments have their original delicate purple watered silk linings. The linings to the bases are lightly padded.
All of the interior has exotic Macassar Ebony veneer.
Condition
This wonderful old box is in very fair condition for its 120/130 years of age. It has sound structure and is a solid weighty box.
There is some age related wear to the exterior Walnut and interior Macassar Ebony. Most of the wear is on the top and inside of the lid, and on the top edges of the compartments from where they have swung back and forth over the years.
There is some wear and marks to the original silk, including some frayed edges to the tops of the upper compartments.
The wear will not appeal to the tastes of all, so please consider this before purchasing the box. Personally, we feel it adds to the charm of this box which has obviously been loved and used.

Width: 14.5cm
Height: 18.5cm (excluding the feet).
The length and width have been measured across the lid.
Swing Compartments x 4:
10.5 by 10.5cm with a 5.0cm depth.
Lower Bottom Compartment:
22.5 by 10.4cm with a 3.5cm depth.
