A large vintage Japanese musical jewellery box. Beautiful black lacquered finish and hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. The interior has a fitted mirror and a beautiful large bridge feature with two compartments.
This is a large vintage musical jewellery box, dating to the 1940s/50s. It was made in Japan and has its original Japanese musical movement. It is also complete with its original key which locks the box securely.
The Exterior
The box has a glossy black lacquered finish and is decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These feature Mount Fuji, temples, a bridge, trees, swans and sailing boats. This lovely decoration is on the lid plus all four sides of the box. The lid is further decorated with iridescent Abalone shell inlay.
There is a very pretty engraved escutcheon to the keyhole and the box is complete with its original hinges.
The Interior
The interior has a lift up storage tray which automatically rises when you open the lid. The tray is in the form of an oriental bridge and has two individual storage compartments.
The interior also has a black lacquered finish and hand-painted scenes to complement the decoration on the exterior. The colours of the paint on the bridge are superb. It has vibrant shades of red, pink, green and white, all beautifully highlighted with gold!
The tray rises smoothly with its white metal cantilever hinges and there is beautiful engraving to the hinges on the lids of the compartments.
Beneath the tray is a further compartment which is fairly large and roomy. The musical movement is cased to the right of this. This has a lovely lacquered cover which can be lifted off if the movement ever needs attention. In front of the casing is a further little storage compartment.
All of the compartments, and the inside of the lid, are beautifully lined with ribbed blue cord fabric. These linings are original.
There is a lovely fitted mirror with bevelled edges to the inside of the lid.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays a pretty tune, the title of which we have not been able to dechiper.
Operating The Musical Movement
The music is operated via a wind-up key on the base of the box. Four turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. Please allow the movement to fully unwind before rewinding. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 65/75 years of age. It has sound structure and no splits or cracks.
There is some light wear here and there to the lacquered finish and some blemishes to the lacquer/paint around the temple area on the lid. The colours of the paint are still nice and vibrant.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and still in good condition overall. There are some small areas of wear to the cord fabric around the mirror.
The mirror has aged in areas but has no chips or cracks.
All of the flaws on/in this box are minor and do not spoil its beautiful overall appearance. The wear is as we'd expect for its age.

Please note that we cannot deliver to international PO boxes as we use a secure insured postal service that requires a signature.
