Lovely large Japanese musical jewellery box with a cream lacquered finish and decorative scenes. The box has a stylish double lidded design and multiple compartments with their original linings. Circa 1950s.

This is a lovely large, double lidded, musical jewellery box, with multiple compartments. It was made in Japan in the 1950s and is complete with its original key.
The Exterior
This wonderful large box has a stylish double lidded design. It has a lovely cream lacquered finish and decorative transfer printed scenes. The scenes feature a church, houses, trees, fields and clouds. The maker's small logo is stamped upon the lid on the bottom right corner.
The front of the box has two pretty heart-shaped escutcheons to the keyholes. The box is complete with its original key, however, only the left lock is still functional.
The box stands slightly raised on its original gold metal domed feet.
The box has its original hinges which are still in good working order.
Note: The lacquer is a mid cream shade and is not as pale as it appears to be in the photos. The close-up photo of the inside of the left lid most closely resembles the true colour of the lacquer.
The Interior
The interior has multiple storage compartments of various shapes and sizes. These are complete with their original ribbed cord linings. The linings are a beautiful shade of blue. They have a soft brushed finish and a velvet-like appearance.
There are five compartments in the base of the box and a lovely top compartment that automatically rises when you lift up the right lid. This rises up with its lovely polished silver metal cantilever hinges. This top compartment has hinged double doors that have transfer printed scenes to complement those on the exterior. The doors also have their original small ring handles and silver/grey silky tassels.
The musical movement is located beneath the top raised compartment and is concealed by a fixed ledge.
The insides of the lids have their original mirrors and original silver/grey satin panels and frills. There is also a lovely pouch within the left lid which is made of the same material. New silk barley twist trim has been added around the mirrors to beautifully frame them. This has replaced the original gold resin beaded frames which were looking very worn and dated!
All of the interior walls have a nice cream lacquered finish to match that on the exterior.
The Musical Movement
We have not been able to decipher the tune but please feel free to call us if you'd like to listen to it before purchasing this box.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Six turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full. The tune begins playing when you lift up the right lid.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the right lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement as this will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction and/or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in lovely vintage condition and is structurally sound. The cream lacquer has some light wear/discolouration in a few areas. This is commensurate with age and honest use.
The interior linings are still in very good condition. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There is some light staining to the cord linings in certain areas and some minor scratches to the silver/grey satin panels.
The mirror is still beautifully clear and has no chips or cracks.
The hinges and musical movement are still in very good working order.
