Beautiful antique Victorian jewellery box with Flame Mahogany veneers and a fully refurbished interior. Circa 1870/1880. Beautiful sarcophagus shape.

This is a wonderful large antique jewellery box with beautiful Flame Mahogany veneer. It dates back to the Victorian period, circa 1870/1880, and has a fully refurbished interior.
The Exterior
This box has a beautiful sarcophagus shape and wonderful Flame Mahogany veneer. The Mahogany has a beautiful warm rich colour and superb figuration. There is a paragraph below with further information about this particular variety of Mahogany.
The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back. It is also complete with its original solid brass lock and complementary brass keyhole escutcheon. Please note the lock is not functional and therefore has no key.
The bottom of the box has its original beautifully shaped bun feet and a new black felt covering.
About Flame Mahogany
Flame Mahogany (also known as 'crotch-cut' Mahogany) is cut at the crotch where a limb protruded from the trunk of the tree. This produces the beautiful flame like figuration.
The Interior
The interior of this box has been fully refurbished. There are new burgundy velvet linings to the inside of the lid and base of the compartment, plus new quality textured grey paper linings to the walls inside the lid and compartment.
The compartment is deep and spacious and will hold a good amount of jewellery, including large pieces such as watches, broad bangles and chunky beads.
Condition
This lovely antique box is in very good condition despite its 140/150 years of age. It is a solid robust box with sound structure.
The Mahogany veneer is still beautiful overall with just a few old sympathetically done repairs, namely some small replacement pieces of veneer to the back left corner of the lid; rear back wall at the very bottom, and to the inside lid's edge on the left side. There is minor light wear to the veneer on the front corners of the lid. These flaws/wear are as we'd expect on a box of this age that has been loved and used for its purpose.
The hinges are still in good working order and the interior linings are in excellent condition, being relatively new.
