1950s vintage musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. Plays 'O Sole Mio'. Beautiful marquetry and micro mosaic inlay. Newly refurbished satin lined interior. Working lock and key.

This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1950s and has a newly refurbished interior. It has a quality Swiss Lador musical movement which plays the beautiful old Italian tune 'O Sole Mio'.
The Exterior
This box has a lovely burl wood veneer which has wonderful figuration.
The lid has a lovely raised panel with beautiful marquetry inlay. The inlay consists of several varieties of wood. There is fine inlaid stringing surrounding the inlay.
There is beautiful micro mosaic inlay running around all four sides of the box.
The box has its original piano hinge and is complete with its original working lock and key. It stands raised on beautiful turned wood feet.
About The Mosaic Inlay
The beautiful mosaic inlay on this box is known as 'mosaic tesselated inlay'. It is made up of 1000s of tiny pieces of wood, painstakingly put together to form an intricate mosaic design.
The Interior
The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer. There is a single storage compartment on the left and a ledge to the right of this. The musical movement is concealed beneath this. Small pieces of jewellery such as rings, earrings and pendants, can be placed upon the ledge.
The compartment and the ledge have new satin linings. The lining in the compartment has been padded to protect jewellery. The satin is a lovely mid blue shade.
The inside of the lid has its original inset mirror. This is surrounded by a twisted gold silk trim and a lovely fine inlaid frame.

The Musical Movement
This box has a quality Swiss Lador musical movement. This plays the beautiful tune 'O Sole Mio' which some may recognise from the old Cornetto TV advertisements. These advertisements used the 'O Sole Mio' tune and added the lyrics 'Just One Cornetto' etc.
The movement is in excellent working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
There is a tiny fragment of the movement/song title label remaining on the bottom of the box. You can just make out the letters 'ador' for the Swiss Lador movement.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 4 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.

History Of Lador Musical Movements
Lador was a family business for almost 100 years. It was founded in 1889 in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland by Adrien Lador. Later, his son Fernand and then his grandson Robert ran the company until 1985, at which time it was taken over by the Swiss Reuge musical movement company. Lador mostly manufactured small 18 note movements.

We would like to make you aware that vintage locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that may malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This lovely old box has sound structure and is in nice condition for its 70 years of age.
All of the inlay is present and intact.
The interior linings, being new, are in clean unworn condition.
The mirror is in fair condition with no chips or cracks. It has some speckled foxing as we'd expect with its age.
The hinge is still in good working order and the box locks securely.
There are a few chips to the veneer on the inside edges of the box. 2 around the lock and one on the left side. These are not overly unsightly and can only be seen when the box is open.
