Lovely antique jewellery box with a textured black leather finish. Late Victorian, circa 1890/1900. The interior has a fixed storage tray and also a drawer that is concealed behind the box's drop-down front. The box has its original working lock and its original velvet and satin linings.
This is a lovely small compact antique jewellery box, dating to 1890/1900. It has a fixed storage tray at the top and a drawer concealed behind its interesting drop-down front. The box is complete with its original working lock.
The Exterior
This box has a textured black leather covering and a decorative shield-shaped metal escutcheon to the keyhole. It has an interesting drop-down front that conceals an interior drawer and it has its original working brass lock and brass hinges. The hinges are quality 'stop' hinges that hold the lid upright. A period replacement key has been fitted to the lock.
The lid has a lightly domed form with lovely curvature.
These beautiful Victorian boxes with concealed drawers are not that common and are becoming more difficult to find. Most leather boxes from this period have a removable storage tray with a standard storage compartment beneath.
The Interior
The interior has a fixed storage compartment at the top which has three compartments plus a ring storage section. Beneath these compartments (behind the drop-down front) is a lovely drawer with a polished gold metal swing handle. The drawer and all of the interior walls have the same leather finish like that on the exterior.
There are padded satin panels to the inside of the lid and the inside of the drop-down front. The same are fitted to the base of the drawer compartment and to the bases of the left and right compartments in the tray.
There are velvet linings to the tray's centre compartment and ring storage section. The centre compartment has a circular ring that was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This would now look lovely with a round locket, pendant or brooch within it! A small narrow width bangle or chain bracelet would look lovely around the outside of the ring.
All of the velvet and satin linings are original. These are a lovely deep burgundy shade.
Condition
This box is in very fair condition for its age. It has sound structure and no damage. There is some minor wear to the leather on the lid and sides as we'd expect on a Victorian box. This is from age, handling and honest use.
The leather on the bottom and bottom corners has a fair amount of wear. Again this is from age and honest use, having occurred from friction and handling.
The interior satin and velvet linings are in good condition for their 120/130 years of age. They are neatly fitted and have only minor light wear/light marks from honest use.
The hinges are in good working order and the key securely locks the box.

Holds approx 4/5 rings depending on their shape and size.
