Lovely vintage mid 20th century Italian jewellery box from Sorrento. Highly decorative marquetry inlay to the lid and all four sides. Beautiful original velvet linings to the interior. Lovely oval inset mirror and original working lock and key.
This is a beautiful vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the mid 20th century and is in very good condition for its age!
The Exterior
This box is highly decorated all over with beautiful marquetry inlay. There is a further inlaid frame around the edges of the lid and the feet have matching inlay to this. The inlay is made up of several varieties of wood and it covers the lid plus all four sides. The marquetry features garlands of flowers and leaves. The box is beautifully finished with inlaid Satinwood stringing. There is a vast amount of detail to the marquetry inlay which would've taken hours of skilled workmanship to complete.
The box stands raised on its original block feet. It is complete with its original polished piano hinge, as well as its original working lock and key.
All of the exterior has a glossy polished and varnished finish.
The Interior
The interior has beautiful Satinwood veneer and a single storage compartment. The compartment has its original blue velvet linings.
There is a lovely oval inset mirror to the inside of the lid. This is surrounded by a frame of dark blue barley twist silk cord. Again, these are completely original features.
Condition
This wonderful box is in very good condition for its 70 plus years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact and the box is structurally sound. There is only very minor light wear to the exterior.
There are some light scratches to the bottom of the box which cannot be seen unless you turn the box over.
The interior linings are in good condition. They are still neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There are some marks to the velvet in the base of the compartment.
The mirror is still in very good condition. It has no chips or cracks and is securely seated. It has some minor tiny speckles of foxing that are in no way unsightly. Some foxing is usual on such old mirrors.
The hinge is still in good working order and the box locks securely.
