A beautiful vintage jewellery box, made in the 1940s in Jerusalem. Made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration. Lovely hand painted silhouette decoration. Comes with two old silk handkerchiefs from Jerusalem.

This is a lovely vintage jewellery box, made in Jerusalem in the 1940s. It comes complete with two beautiful old hand stitched silk handkerchiefs from Jerusalem which were found inside the box.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration. The scene on the lid features silhouetted Camels, figures and palm trees, and 'Jerusalem' in beautiful italic script.
The box is complete with its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The Olivewood has a beautiful polished finish.
The bottom of the box has a hand written Arabic word. This is possibly the maker's mark or the name of the box's original owner.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. The base of the compartment has a new cotton fabric lining which features a leafy print.
History
This box was made as a souvenir for the Jerusalem tourist market.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
Condition
This lovely old box is in good condition. It is structurally sound and has no cracks. There is a small chip to the Olivewood on the front top right corner of the main body. This is not very noticeable.
The hinges are still in good working order.
(The white handkerchief is stained).
