A lovely antique Flame Mahogany jewellery box with a beautifully refurbished velvet lined interior. Circa 1880/1890. Complete with working lock and key.

This is a lovely antique Flame Mahogany jewellery box with a beautifully refurbished interior. It dates to the Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Flame Mahogany veneer which has a wonderful rich colour and superb figuration. There is a lovely inlaid escutcheon to the keyhole and the box has its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright. It is also complete with its original working brass lock and key.
The bottom of the box has a new blue felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
About Flame Mahogany
Flame Mahogany (also known as 'crotch-cut' Mahogany) is cut at the crotch, where a limb protruded from the trunk of the tree. This produces its very decorative flame-like figuration.
The Interior
We have beautifully refurbished the interior of this box to bring it back to its former glory. The walls of the compartment and inside of the lid have new high quality blue paper linings, and the back panel of the lid and base of the compartment have new premium Royal Blue cotton velvet panels. The panels are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The compartment is spacious and will hold a good amount of jewellery. It is deep enough for large pieces such as broad bangles, chunky beads and watches.
Condition
This lovely old box is in fair condition and is structurally sound.
There is some light wear to the veneer on the lid; a small piece of veneer missing to the bottom front right corner, and a couple of minor fine splits to the rear right corner of the lid. All in all the box is still lovely. Its minor flaws act to prove its age and in our opinion they add to its charm, showing the box has been loved and used. Please view all of the photos provided.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order.
All of the interior linings are in excellent unworn/unused condition, being new.
