This is a beautiful vintage Japanese musical jewellery box with a black lacquered finish and hand-painted landscape scenes. It dates to the 1950s/1960s and is a rare miniature example of other Japanese boxes with the same style and from the same period.
The Exterior
The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and is beautifully decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These include Mount Fuji, a temple, sailing boats, trees, birds and a bridge. The painting is in vibrant colours of red, blue, green, white, silver and gold. The silver and gold metallic paint adds a lovely shimmery touch to the box.
The box has its original pretty white metal clasp which is shaped like a shell and nicely engraved. It also has its original white metal hinges and an interior quadrant hinge which holds the lid upright.
The box stands raised on its original feet which are beautifully shaped.
The Interior
The interior has a single small storage compartment and its original fitted mirror to the inside of the lid. The compartment plus the walls to the inside of the lid have their original ribbed cord linings.
The musical movement is concealed within a casing to the right of the compartment. The ledge of this casing has a black lacquered finish and hand-painted sailing boats. This complements the decoration on the exterior.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful tune 'Fur Elise' which was composed by Beethoven in 1810.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Seven turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The movement is in good working order. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
You can view our full returns policy which includes musical movements by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
