Lovely vintage Italian jewellery box in the novel form of a volume of books. Made in Naples in the 1940s. Pretty inlay and hand painted Swallows to the lid and original felt linings to the interior.

This is a vintage Italian jewellery box, made in Naples, Italy in the 1940s.
The Exterior
This box is in the novel form of a volume of books. There are two books horizontally placed at the top and bottom, and a volume of upright books in between. These are numbered 1-7 in hand-painted Roman Numerals.
The top book is the lid of the box. This has scrolling marquetry inlay, a band of micro mosaic inlay, and hand painted Swallows. Beneath the Swallows is 'RICORDO DI NAPOLI' which translates to 'Memory of Naples'. The bodies of the Swallows have been repainted.
The box is complete with its original hinges. It is predominantly made of solid Olivewood. The right corner of the lid is veneered with a different variety of hardwood.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment and is complete with its original red felt linings.
Condition
This box is in fair vintage condition. It has sound structure.
All of the inlay is present and intact.
There is a small piece of veneer missing to the rear edge of the lid.
The box once had a secret locking mechanism but this no longer functions. To open the box you simply lift up the lid. There is a secret compartment in the base of the box (within the bottom book). The missing key to this box would once have been stored in here. You can now use this compartment to store small pieces of jewellery or little trinkets. To access this compartment you need to slide the spine of the bottom book to the left, then slide forward the strip of wood concealing the compartment.
There is some wear and marks to the interior felt linings.
The hinges are still in good working order.

Please note that we cannot deliver to international PO boxes as we use a secure insured postal service that requires a signature.
