Very pretty vintage Japanese musical jewellery box. Cream lacquered finish and hand-painted flowers. Beautiful mirrored interior with vibrant pink cord linings and a spinning Ballerina.

This is a very pretty vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1950s/1960s. It is decorated with beautiful flowers and the interior has a spinning ballerina.
The Exterior
The box has a beautiful cream lacquered finish and stunning hand-painted flowers and leaves.
There are two large red and pink Roses on the lid, complete with their stems and leaves, and these are mingled with pretty blue Forget-Me-Nots. The Roses have a lovely raised texture and this has given them a beautiful three-dimensional effect. There is a hand-painted gold frame around the edges of the lid.
The front of the box has a stemmed pink Rose and blue Forget-Me-Nots, and there are further Forget-Me-Nots on each side of the box.
There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole which features waves and sailing boats.
The box is complete with its original working lock and key.
The box also has its original piano hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which holds the lid upright.
The Interior
The interior has two storage compartments. The musical movement is concealed beneath the ledge which is situated between the compartments.
There is a pretty ballerina in the centre section which spins around when the movement is wound. The ballerina has a hand-painted gold bustier and hand-painted gold hair. She also has a pretty net skirt with red polka dots.
The inside of the lid has beautifully fitted vertical mirror panels. The ballerina is reflected in these and when you hold the box at a certain angle there appears to be 7 ballerinas present.
Both compartments, plus the inside of the lid, have colourful vibrant pink linings. The linings are beautiful ribbed cord fabric. There is pretty braided silk cord trim on either side of the mirrors.
The ballerina, mirrors and linings are all original.
The Musical Movement
This box has a vintage Japanese Fuji movement. We have not been able to decipher the tune of the musical movement but please feel free to call us if you'd like to listen to it before purchasing this box.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements and locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction and/or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements and locks that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement and lock are still working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in lovely vintage condition with very little wear despite its age. It is structurally sound and has no damage.
The lacquer still has a glossy sheen which is wonderful as this often dulls over time. There are a few minor marks to the lacquer and some minor wear to the edges/feet of the box. The lacquer is in amazing condition overall and the little flaws do not spoil its beautiful overall appearance.
There is no loss of paint to the flowers, stems or leaves, and their colours are still vibrant.
The interior linings are still in very good condition. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There are a few little marks but nothing unsightly.
The mirrors are still beautiful and have no chips or cracks.
The hinge and musical movement are still in good working order.
The ballerina's net skirt has discoloured over the years but is otherwise fine.
