A very pretty vintage Japanese musical jewellery box. Cream lacquered finish and hand-painted Roses. Beautiful mirrored interior with vibrant pink cord linings.

This is a very pretty vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1950s/1960s. It is decorated with beautiful flowers and the interior has a fitted mirror.
The Exterior
The box has a beautiful cream lacquered finish and stunning hand-painted flowers and leaves.
There are beautiful leafy Roses on the lid. These have a lovely raised texture which has given them a three-dimensional effect. There is also hand-painted gold stringing and blue scalloped edging detail on either side of the floral decoration.
The front of the box has two further Roses and a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole. Beneath these are hand-painted gold stringing and blue scalloped edging detail, which matches that on the lid.
The box is complete with its original working lock, key and hinges. These are quality stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment and a lovely fitted mirror inside the lid. The musical movement is concealed beneath the ledge to the left of the compartment.
The compartment plus the inside of the lid have colourful cerise pink ribbed cord linings.
The Musical Movement
This box has its original musical movement. We have not been able to decipher its tune but please feel free to call us if you'd like to listen to it before purchasing the box.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Five turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. It is advisable to let the movement fully unwind before rewinding.
Vintage movements and locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction and/or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements and locks that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement and lock are still working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in wonderful vintage condition. It has sound structure and very little wear despite its age.
The lacquer still has a glossy sheen which is wonderful as this often dulls over time.
There is no loss of paint to the flowers, stems or leaves.
The interior linings are still in very good condition. They are clean, neatly fitted, and have no splits or fraying. There is one little mark to the lining on the bottom of the compartment.
The mirror is clear and has no chips or cracks.
The hinges and musical movement are still in good working order.
