This is a beautiful Art Deco jewellery box, dating to the 1930s. It has beautiful fully refurbished compartments and is in lovely condition for its 90 plus years of age!
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Walnut veneer which has superb figuration and a warm rich colour. It has a highly decorative wide band of exotic Macassar Ebony veneer, running down the centre of the lid and front. Further details of this variety of Ebony are given below. Further to this, the rear corners of the lid, are inlaid with diagonally positioned Oak veneer. This is most unusual!
There is a stylish Walnut lipped handle to the lid that enables you to lift it up with ease.
The box has a stylish 'flat' streamlined design which was very popular throughout the Art Deco era. It stands raised on its original block feet which have their original green felt coverings. The felt protects the surfaces of furniture.
The box has its original retracting quadrant hinges that hold the lid upright.
About Macassar Ebony
Macassar is a beautiful exotic hardwood from South East Asia. It is also known as Amara or Striped Ebony, which as you can see derives from its striking characteristic stripes. This stunning striped variety comes from the heartwood of the tree. It is an extremely expensive wood due to the tree growing very slowly and having a limited natural habitat. Also, this species has been exploited over the past few generations, resulting in a population reduction of 20%. It is highly desirable because of its beautiful appearance and this too pushes up its price.
The Interior
The interior has three beautifully partitioned compartments that have all been newly refurbished by ourselves. The bases to the left and right compartments have new padded royal blue velvet panels and the centre compartment has a new padded vintage Liberty fabric panel. The walls to each compartment are lined with the same royal blue velvet as the left and right base panels.
The New Panels and Linings
All of these are completely handmade in order to fit the compartments perfectly. The padded panels provide cushioned protection for jewellery.
The velvet is high-quality cotton velvet. It is beautifully plush and has a lovely tight weave.
The vintage Liberty fabric is absolutely beautiful! It has stunning large blue flowers that have beautiful shading, intermingled with smaller flowers and flowing stemmed leaves.

Condition
This beautiful box is in lovely condition for its age! It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
There is some fading to the lacquered finish on the lid but this does not spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The interior panels and linings, being new, are in immaculate condition.
