Lovely Art Deco musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. Made of Olivewood and Satinwood and featuring decorative marquetry and micro mosaic inlay. The interior has been fully refurbished with red satin and high-quality embossed paper.

This is a lovely small Art Deco musical jewellery box. It was made in Sorrento, Italy and it dates to the 1930s. The interior has been fully refurbished by ourselves.
The Exterior
This box is made of a variety of woods. Its sides and base are solid Olivewood and its front and rear are solid Satinwood. The box has a stylish streamlined shape which was popular throughout the Art Deco period. The Olivewood sides are beautifully curved and the box stands raised on its original beautifully turned tapered wood feet.
The lid has a lovely burl Walnut veneered panel with marquetry inlaid decoration and narrow strips of micro mosaic inlay. There is a thin layer of Mahogany veneer beneath the marquetry. The inlay consists of several varieties of wood. The marquetry features beautiful scrolling vines and two mythological dragon-like creatures. Some tiny pieces of the mosaic inlay are stained blue and red.
The box has its original gold metal piano hinge that holds the lid upright. It also has its original lock but please note the key is missing.
The Interior
The interior has been fully refurbished by ourselves. It has a single storage compartment to the right and the musical movement is cased to the left. In addition to the storage space within the compartment, there is further shallow storage space upon the ledge of the movement's casing.
The inside of the lid has its original inset mirror, surrounded by a fine inlaid wood frame. This is a quality bevelled edged mirror that has a beautiful oval shape.
There are new lightly padded red satin panels to the base of the compartment and ledge of the movement's casing. The dividing partition has new red satin linings. The walls of the interior have new high-quality paper linings that have a shiny gold embossed pattern.
The mirror has been framed with new beautiful gold silk cord trim that has a decorative barley twist design.
The New Panels and Linings
All of these are completely handmade/cut to size, in order to fit the interior perfectly. The padded panels provide cushioned protection for jewellery.
The satin has a lovely sheen and a beautiful tight weave.
The paper has a scrolling foliate print. This design was chosen to complement the marquetry on the lid. The red satin reflects beautifully in the paper's gold embossed finish.

The Musical Movement

Refurbished Inlaid Art Deco Musical Jewellery Box From Sorrento.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
The satin covered ledge to the movement's casing can be removed should the movement ever require attention.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Four turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements that deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in very good condition for its 90 plus years of age. It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and use.
All of the veneer and inlay is present and secure. There is some fading to the thin layer of Mahogany veneer that is beneath the marquetry inlay.
The interior satin and paper linings are in clean unworn condition, being new.
The mirror is secure and has no chips or cracks. It has some age-related foxing and cloudiness which is usually the case with such old mirrors.
The musical movement is in good working order, as stated above.
There are some fine surface scratches to the hinge.
