This is a beautiful early 19th-century jewellery box, dating to 1810/1820. The interior has been beautifully refurbished with satin panels and quality 'antique' patterned paper linings.
The Exterior
The box has beautiful Mahogany veneer and lovely Boxwood stringing to all of its edges. It also has a complementary inlaid Boxwood escutcheon to the keyhole. The Mahogany has a rich warm colour and beautiful figuration all over.
The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges that hold the lid upright. It also has its original brass lock. Please see the condition notes below for details of the lock.
The bottom of the box has a new red felt covering that will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has a lovely deep storage compartment and has been fully refurbished by ourselves. There are beautiful new padded red satin panels to the base of the compartment and inside of the lid, plus new high-quality printed paper linings to the walls. The panel to the compartment has new red silk cord trim. This has a decorative barley twist design.
The New Panels and Linings
All of these are completely handmade/cut to size, in order to fit the compartment and lid perfectly.
The padded satin panels provide cushioned protection for jewellery.
The satin has a lovely sheen and a beautiful tight weave. The red silk trim has a lovely sheen also and is a slightly lighter red than the satin. This shade was chosen to create a beautiful contrast against the deeper red satin.
The paper has a decorative 'antique' floral print with a repeating pattern. This paper was chosen as its design is similar to original antique box lining papers.

History of the Box
This box started its life as a very expensive, two-compartment tea caddy. It is a wonderful piece of social history that has now been converted into a functional jewellery box!
Condition
The box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and use.
The interior satin and paper linings are in immaculate condition, being new.
There is a small piece of Boxwood stringing missing to the rear right corner of the lid. This isn't very noticeable, particularly as it is the front of the box that will usually be on display.
There is a small amount of veneer missing to the inside edges of the lid.
There are two old fine crack repairs to the left side of the box which have been done sympathetically.
None of the above flaws spoil the overall beautiful appearance of the box. They add to its charm and the authenticity of its age.
Please note the lock is temperamental and so no key has been provided for this reason. Trying another key in the lock could result in the box becoming permanently locked.
