This is a lovely small Art Deco jewellery box, made in Menton, in the French Riviera. It is made of Olivewood from the Mediterranean and it dates to the 1930s.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration. It has a beautiful hand-painted spray of flowers on the lid, along with 'Menton' in hand-painted fancy script.

The box has its original beautifully shaped clasp which keeps the lid securely closed. It also has its original 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.

The Olivewood has a polished and varnished finish which has given it a lovely sheen and smoothness.

The Olivewood to the bottom of the box has been left in its natural state.

The Interior

The interior has a single storage compartment which has been beautifully refurbished. It has new brushed cotton linings which have a very pretty floral pattern. The fabric is pastel yellow and has beautiful Daisies and leaves. The panel to the base has been nicely padded to give cushioned protection for jewellery.

History

This box was made as a souvenir for the Menton tourist market, probably by an Italian craftsman. Many Italians migrated to France in the early 20th century, bringing with them Olivewood from their country. Menton is a beautiful medieval town in the French Riveria. It is located in the Cote d'Azur region in Southeast France.

About Olivewood

Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.

Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.

The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.

Condition

This beautiful old box is in excellent condition. It is structurally sound and has no chips or cracks. It has very little wear despite its 90 years of age.

The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate clean and unworn condition.

All of the hand-painted decoration is present and its colours are still vivid.

The hinges are still in excellent working order and the clasp securely closes the lid.
