Lovely small Italian oval-shaped jewellery box. Soft brushed felt covering and an Italian hallmarked silver plaque to the lid. The silver has both a full Italian hallmark and a full London assay office import hallmark.
FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We Ship Worldwide.
This is a lovely Italian oval-shaped jewellery box with a beautiful sterling silver plaque to the lid. The silver has been fully hallmarked twice, both in Italy and England. The box dates back to the early 1990s.
The Exterior
This box has a stylish oval shape and is decorated with a hallmarked silver plaque. It has a soft brushed felt covering which is a racing green shade, making it suitable for any gender.
The silver plaque has beautifully engraved scrolling decoration and an embossed frame in the centre. The silver within the frame has an undecorated polished finish, allowing vacant space for some engraved initials or names/dates if desired. Your local jeweller or key cutter can provide an engraving service.
The Silver Hallmarks/Makers Marks
The silver has a full Italian hallmark and maker's registration number, plus a full London Assay Office import hallmark and maker's mark. It also has a separate 925 sterling silver purity stamp.
The Italian silver hallmark includes the silversmith's registration number (297) and the two-letter abbreviation (FI) of the province in Italy where the silversmith was registered. The FI abbreviation is for the province Firenze. The Italian hallmark loosely dates the box from 1968 onwards, however, the London hallmark dates the box more precisely!
The London Assay Office import hallmark has the date letter T for 1993. This is the year the box was imported into England. At this point, the silver's purity was checked and hallmarked again to confirm that it has a 925 (92.5%) sterling grade. There is a maker's mark (PHV & Co) present with the London import hallmark, for silversmiths P H Vogel & Co of Birmingham. It is unclear as to why this maker's mark is present, considering the plaque was made in Italy and registered to a particular Italian silversmith. This second maker's mark alongside an import hallmark is rarely seen and is most interesting!
The Interior
The interior has a single felt-lined storage compartment.
Condition
This box is in lovely condition overall.
There is minor light wear to the felt covering and a few dints around the rim of the silver plaque. The silver will be polished prior to posting the box.
There are a few little ripples to the felt around the lid, just from where the felt was not pulled taut enough/smoothed enough, during the manufacture of the box.
