Stunning vintage Italian musical jewellery box from Sorrento, Italy. Highly figured veneer and beautiful floral inlay to the lid and all four sides. Plush red velvety linings to the interior. Working lock and key. Circa 1960s.

This is a fabulous vintage musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1960s and is in wonderful condition. The box is a large example of its type and its shape/design is rare. Most Sorrento boxes of this type are much smaller in size and we rarely come across examples with a domed lid such as this box has.
The Exterior
This box has a very decorative, highly figured veneer and stunning floral inlay to the lid and all four sides. This makes the box a beautiful display item, no matter how you position it.
The inlay consists of various colourful fruitwoods and features several varieties of flowers and their stems/leaves. Some of the flowers are buds and some are in full bloom.
The beautiful figuration of the veneer, combined with the box's elongated shape and domed lid, give the box a beautiful log-like appearance. This, alongside the beautiful floral inlay, makes the box an ideal gift for someone who likes to take walks in woods or forests.
The entire box has a highly polished finish which has given it a gorgeous glossy shine and a tactile ultra-smooth surface.
The box has its original polished gold metal piano hinge and its original working brass lock. It also has its original pretty shaped key which locks the box securely.
There is a beautifully shaped polished brass escutcheon to the keyhole which has lovely scroll detail.
The box stands slightly raised on its original nicely shaped block feet. These have felt pads which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title and MADE IN ITALY labels.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment which is fairly large. This is deep and roomy enough to hold large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles and watches. The musical movement is very nicely cased to the right of the storage compartment. The ledge of the casing provides further shallower storage space for smaller pieces of jewellery such as rings, earrings, pendants and brooches.
The entire interior has its original red plush velvety linings.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful 'Edelweiss' tune from the 1959 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, 'The Sound of Music'.
The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
The movement's casing can easily be removed should it ever require attention.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Six turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
We would like to make you aware that vintage locks and musical movements can occasionally malfunction. They are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use.
We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the movement and lock are still working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting the box.

Condition
This box is in extremely good condition. It has sound structure and only very minor light wear.
All of the veneer and inlay is present and intact.
The interior linings are neatly fitted. They are in excellent clean condition and have no splits or fraying.
The hinge and lock are still in perfect working order.
There is some tarnish to the surface of the lock.
