Stunning vintage Italian jewellery box from Sorrento. Vitreous enamelled finish and a beautiful inlaid scene to the lid. Plush red velvety linings to the interior. Working lock and key. Circa 1980s/1990s.

This is a stunning vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1980s/1990s and is in wonderful condition. The box is a large example of its type. Most of this design are much smaller. The box is musical and plays 'TORNA A SURRIENTO' (Come Back to Sorrento).
The Exterior
This box has a very stylish elongated octagonal shape with beautifully rounded corners to the body. It has a stunning vitreous teal blue enamel finish and a beautiful large inlaid scene on the lid.
The box has a lovely burl wood veneer and you can see its beautiful figuration and knots through the enamel.
The entire box has been highly polished and varnished, This has given it a gorgeous glossy sheen and it is beautifully smooth to the touch. The vitreous enamel adds a lovely subtle shimmer to the box.
The vitreous enamel is beautifully framed by Mahogany veneer and fine inlaid Satinwood stringing.
The beautiful inlay features a mandolin, oboes and a scrolled musical score sheet, amongst pretty leafy flowers. The inlay consists of a variety of woods which have different colours and grains.
The box has its original polished gold metal piano hinge and working lock. A replacement vintage key has been added to the lock. The keyhole has a pretty polished metal escutcheon with embossed detail.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title and MADE IN ITALY SORRENTO labels.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. There is a ring storage section to the left of this and the musical movement is cased to the right. These all have their original red plush velvety linings. The lining to the base is padded to provide a protective cushion for jewellery.
There is further shallow storage space (1cm depth) upon the ledge of the movement's casing. You can place flat/fine pieces of jewellery here, such as Creole/Sleeper earrings, chains, pendants and brooches.
The inside of the lid and edges of the compartment have a deep rich Mahogany veneer. This also has a glossy high polished and varnished finish. There is fine inlaid Satinwood stringing, framing the veneer, which matches that on the lid's exterior.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Torna a Surriento' (Torna a Sorrento). The English translation of this is 'Come Back To Sorrento'. It is a beautiful Neapolitan song which was composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis. The song has since been sung by numerous performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and each of the three tenors, to name just a few!
The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. Please allow the movement to fully unwind before rewinding. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

The movement's casing can easily be removed should it ever require attention.
Condition
This box is in extremely good condition. It has sound structure and only very minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use. There are a few teeny chips within the veneer/varnish which are barely noticeable.
All of the vitreous enamel and inlay is present and intact.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and in good clean condition. They have only minor light wear, again commensurate with age and honest use.
The hinge is in good working order and the box locks securely.
The musical movement is in perfect working order, as stated above.
