A superb early Victorian jewellery box with lovely Rosewood veneer and Mother of Pearl inlay. Beautiful partially refurbished interior. Multiple storage compartments.
FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. NO International Postage.
This is a superb antique Rosewood jewellery box, manufactured by the respected London maker J.J. Mechi. It dates to the early Victorian period and is in wonderful condition for its age. Mechi's original authenticity label is still within the box and some printed information on this manufacturer will be included in the sale.
The Exterior
This box has lovely Rosewood veneer which has a warm rich colour and beautiful figuration.
The lid has an inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche and the keyhole has a complementary Mother of Pearl shield escutcheon.
The box is complete with its original brass lock, key, and hinges. The lock is a little stiff and so we advise that the key be used for decorative purposes only.
The bottom of the box has its original covering.
The Interior
The interior has a new french polished hardwood storage tray with multiple compartments. There is a larger single compartment beneath this, plus an original drawer in the base of the box. The drawer also has multiple compartments plus a ring storage section at the front. In total there are nine storage compartments.
The drawer has its original purple satin and velvet linings, and the inside of the lid has a new purple satin removable panel. The manufacturer's label is located behind this. The new hardwood tray and lower compartment have been newly refurbished with beautiful contrasting gold and purple satin panels. These complement the box's original linings in the drawer. The panel within the lid has been adorned with a beautiful 19th century pierced Mother of Pearl embellishment.
The drawer has a fabulous fold back brass handle and is kept securely in place by a solid brass rod which is located adjacent to the lock. Simply pull out this rod in order to open the drawer.
The storage tray has solid brass handles which enable you to lift it out of the box with ease. The bottom of the tray has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
Condition
This box is in very good condition for its age. It is structurally sound.
The Mother of Pearl inlaid cartouche and escutcheon are securely seated flush within the veneer.
There are just two minor flaws with the box; a fine age crack to the lid which is stable, and a small veneer repair to the top front right corner of the lid which has been done sympathetically.
The new satin panels are in immaculate unworn, unused condition. The original linings have minor age related wear.
